How do I stop Google Music indexing local music, but without hiding it from local music players?

I don't want Google Music to index all my locally-stored music, and have managed to stop it by following the ".nomedia" advice elsewhere on this site.

But, fairly obviously, this stops anything from finding the music, so my local music player (Pulsar) no longer thinks there is anything on my device. It has the option to exclude certain folders, but not to include certain folders, so I'm in a bit of a catch 22.

Any ideas, anyone?

Welcome to Android Central! Do you still use Google Play Music for the subscription service, radio stations, or podcasts? If not, then how about disabling it?

Is there a downside to letting GPM index the locally saved music? It wouldn't be reflected in the cloud. Otherwise, I'm not aware of a way to split things up like that.
