My nearly 2 year old Galaxy S5 suddenly started having problems with WiFi this week. WiFi would turn off and on repeated until the phone gave up and it jst stayed off. After trying several things, I performed a Factory Reset and Wiped the Cache from the bootloader screen.

Even after all that, WiFi wouldn't start up during the Android first setup screens and continues to not work. Is it pretty safe to say that I likely have a hardware failure and there isn't much else I can do to fix it?

Welcome to Android Central! You're probably right. In case the firmware is corrupted, you could try reinstalling the firmware using Smart Switch: http://www.sammobile.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29914
