how do i delete extra copies of icons

I accidentally made extra copies of my phone icon and my email icon. How do I eliminate the extra copies without losinh any of my daved emails for example? I now have 3 copies of my gmail.

Long-press the icon and drag it to the "remove" label at the top of the screen. That just removes the icon from the home screen, it does not remove the app from the device.
