Why did I get locked out of my phone?

Went to check my phone this morning it said did not recognize my finger print or password. I had seven chances then it went to reset and deleted everything I guess. Tried the reset, said it didn't recognize my phone number which I have had for years. Also did the same for my email. Now google has said try again in 24 hours for reset

That's unusual -- it should just ask for your Google username and password after the factory reset, which is a way to discourage thieves from stealing a phone and simply doing a factory reset to make it their own.

When you change your Google account password, you have to wait 24 hrs before you can log onto a new phone. So wait until 24 hrs has passed, then try to set the phone up again.
