Screen won't turn off during phone calls

I use my phone a ton for actual phone calls, imagine that

When I put the speakerphone on, the screen will not turn off. Even if I press the power button to shut off the screen it will just come back on after a second or two. This has only been happening the past week or so and I can't think of anything that I might have done to cause this.

Anyone experience the same and were you able to fix it? Thanks
