I am still on the old plan (considering changing, but don't quite trust Verizon) I just purchased a G5 to replace my non-sim-card-reading G3.

I had to use a modified hotspot provision on the rooted G3 to use my hotspot on unlimited.

Will I need to do something similar on the G5 or has Verizon relaxed the hotspot usage now that it has unlimited plans?

If your plan doesn't specify that it supports hotspot, you'll need to move to one that does or add the feature to your existing plan (at extra cost). We won't discuss the other option that you've used on your old phone...
