No way to install an app

AC Question

I've got a new Android Set top box today and it has no Play store or any file managers installed. It's got a stock browser and I can download an apk but I can't open it because there is no status bar and I've searched the whole settings but there is no button to turn it on. When I try to go to the Google file manager (settings->storage->explore) it says can't open file. Any help?

Welcome to Android Central! These kinds of Android TV boxes might not be certified for Google Play, which means they can't access the Google Play Store. It probably uses some other 3rd party app store -- do you see any icons for that?

This is one of the main problems with these off-brand or no-name Android TV boxes -- abysmal support.

If you go to the main Settings page, is there a Security menu? If so, go there and look for an Unknown Sources option, and turn that on. Then go back to the file manager and tap the APK file you downloaded to install it.
