Why does my Moto G4 Play duplicate folders ?

I am trying to delete files / photos off my Internal Storage onto the SD card. But, whenever l create a new folder in my SD card and copy photos across to it the phone automatically creates the exact same folder in Internal Storage. So then l think it's 2 folders so l delete the one off Internal Storage and the phone also deletes the folder from SD Card ???? Therefore l lose that set of photos altogether. Beyond frustrating, can someone tell me what is going on ???????
