What Protection Do Android Users Have Against Hackers?

We have constant stories of NSA hacking, ID thieves, and Ransomware. How does an Android user look for unwanted software added to our phones and tablets used to surveil us? Is there specific software that examines your system? Are there ways for users to examine their own systems looking for suspicious code. Has anyone published on the subject for Android users. As of yesterday we have evidence of a former POTUS using the NSA to surveil Americans and political opponents. Being paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you;)

The NSA does not do any major hacking. They just suck up all the cell signals and analyze them at their leisure.

The big protection that Android has is that the user has to give permission for new apps to be installed, unlike Windows and Mac computers.
