Why does my battery drain fast and phone burn my hands?

A

AC Question

I've tried and tested many things so far to solve my problem but the bottom line is that my 5-month-old samsung battery won't hold a charge for long and my phone gets hot randomly or when charging. It seems to be better in safe mode, however the biggest battery eaters are the android systems and android OS, NOT an app.

Could it still indeed be a third party app, given what is draining my battery?

If so, what's the best way to narrow down which app is the problem?

If not, how can I make it so the android system/OS stops being greedy and hurting my phone?

- I've got android 6.0.1 on my galaxy s5
- I've tried wiping the cache partition
- I've turned off enhanced LTE
- I've followed most power-saving tips I've seen

Ok there we go. I'm the original question asker... The new battery is a Samsung replacement and I just tested it and has no bulge or deformities.

Yesterday I did download the GSam battery monitoring app and so far it's android system still on top. For about 6 hours yesterday evening, I put the phone into safe mode and it hardly lost anything. I can't remember the numbers but it was maybe 10% over that time frame. 6pm to midnight.

However when I woke up this morning, I unplugged my phone (NOT in safe mode anymore) and didn't use it for almost an hour and went back and it was down to 84%. I also kept my phone in airplane mode overnight.

This is a screen shot of the GSam app findings.

For the hotness of the phone, check out an app called Watchdog. It is old but it has helped me find apps that are running out of control and making the phone hot.

I just backed up and reset. Now my phone is REALLY hot and stuck on the carrier screen (the ATT logo part of turning the phone on). How long should I wait before taking out the battery in order to shut down the phone?

It sounds as if some downloaded app is causing it - safe mode runs with all downloaded apps disabled. Restart in safe mode, then run one app at a time until you see high battery drain (I know, this could take a couple of days). The last app you loaded before the high drain starts is the one causing the problem.
