Why won't HTC text messages use Zedge tones?

I'm trying to set a new text message notification tone on my HTC M8, i can download Zedge tones and they come up on the notification tones menu, but when a apply them the HTC won't apply them and puts in the default tone, Dahlia. My previous HTC allowed it ok, but this one won't. Any help appreciated

Welcome to Android Central! In the Messaging app, go to the notification settings. If you select one of the Zedge tones, does it play you a sample?

Also, go to Settings>Apps, select Messaging, then Permissions, and make sure it has permission to access your storage/files.
