Moto E phone
Android version 5.1
Android Security patch level 2016-03-01

My phone is normally in my trouser pocket when this happens and it does dial numbers in my Contacts list. Somewher I read that I could use a setting "Always ask me first" but I cannot find such a setting.
Hope you can help.

Welcome to the forums. That 'ask every time' option is usually available in dual SIM models. If that's your case, try in settings - SIM cards - calls.

I tried looking in settings - SIM cards - calls but I don't seem to have such an option. My phone has slots for two SIM cards: one is occupied by the standard Virgin card and the other by a 32Gb SD card.
Has anyone got an explanation for the self-dialling?

I think that option is only available when you have both SIM cards active. About your random calls, it's possible that your phone is detecting touches while in your pocket, it's happened to me before specially when using shorts. Changing your lock options would help, but for me the best trick is using a sunglasses pouch to protect the phone and avoid accidental touches.
