I'm looking for a way to monitor and comfort my wife (who has dementia and resides in a residential care home) because staff are not always available to do so. What I need is to be able to hear her if she is distressed in the night and speak to her reassuringly whenever needed. She cannot operate equipment so a device her end would have to be turned on and left on each evening and turned off next morning. (I can do that.) There is a local wifi link that needs to be activated and a user agreement checked.

Video cameras are not permitted so I'm wondering it would be feasible to use skype sound to keep a connection going through the night? Thoughts about this or alternatives are most welcome.

Yeah, as long as the data link is strong. But then again, if you only want audio, any VoIP calling app would do, or if the device is a phone, then a phone call that's initiated every night and hung up every morning.

For audio over IP, you have options like Whatsapp, Facebook's Messenger, Hangouts, Skype, Viber, etc.
