Where are older emails stored by standard android email app

When emails first arrive they can be seen for a day or two, then the cannot be seen.

Welcome to the forums. I would look in the apps settings to see if they're being archived or moved to another folder. They may also be saved on the server only and removed on the phone. Settings for the app or your account will tell you what is going on.

What type of email account is this: IMAP, POP3, Exchange or something else?

It's also possible that the settings are such that you're only syncing a certain number of days of email. Once that limit is reached, the ones beyond that "drop off" but can be loaded if you so choose. They don't "go someplace", they're just not visible.
