Can someone with spyware remotely access my phone

A friend has split from her partner and has found out is is (and has been for years) reading all her whatsapp, emails, following calls, possibly even using remote microphone switch on and knows even when her alarm goes off as he texts her 5 seconds later! He knows all her email and social logins which have now been changed, and we know he was tracking her every movement so we've switched off location things and looked for an app but cant see one it could be hidden in directories. This afternoon she changed her pin code and charged her phone, switched it on and straight away it says SIM locked enter puk code. Is it possible he has tried to access her phone remotely not knowing the code was changed as she has NOT failed the code use. It just suddenly was blocked. He couldn't have physically got to the phone in these few hours. He set up the account and set up the phone (hence loaded all the spyware on it to read everything before he gave it to her) so its impossible for her to get a PUK code as its in his name. Could he have tried to remote access?
