I use to be able to choose what gif I want to send, and it would send the actual image in the current message, but now it just sends a link to the gif

I have the same problem. Before i could text the image but i couldnt add it to an existing conversation string.. I had to chose the recipient after selecting the GIF.. Now with the latest test version, i can stay within the string but it only sends a link.

In either version, "sending" a picture just sends the picture to your carrier's server and texts the link. In the old version, the app preloaded a thumbnail of the picture, but you still had to download the picture to get the full size one. In the new one, the same thing happens, but you don't get the thumbnail. (Maybe because they were getting complaints from carriers, because the carriers' servers were getting clogged with pictures that never got deleted, and the fix involved someone changing what you see in the app?)

Instead of the "play" button like you used to do. Press the "share" button next to it. That is what allowed me to send a gif like the old days.
I use a Samsung8 so this is what worked for me.
