The email app bundled with the OS has stopped

[AC Question]

The app stopped on July 26 and when I tried to get emails on July 27 the screen went blank. A message stating "no emails" and the emails can not be safely received from the server appeared.
What's the deal?

Welcome to Android Central. Have not seen mention of that message before. It would be helpful to know which device, OS version and app you are using.
