How do i turn on the sms count

Welcome to the forums. What phone and launcher are you using?

Counts (badges) are done by the launcher. If you're using a launcher that doesn't badge Messages, you'll have to install one that does. (There are dozens of them - look in the Play Store.) BTW, the launcher is your home screen and your app drawer, so they're going to change if you change launchers.
