why cant i transfer files from my laptop to my s5 phone E.G music

when i connect my phone to my computer normally a notification is activated alerting me that my phone is connected to laptop. now when i try to move files to my phone it says that the device has stopped responding or has been disconnected even though it hasnt been.

Which version of android?
Which carrier?

After accepting the connection to the computer, verify that the connection type is MTP or "all files" or the like.
