Welcome to Android Central! Try using Android File Transfer, although it's notoriously buggy. Another option is wireless file transfer, using an app like AirDroid.

I would also highly recommend taking advantage of Google Photos backup, which can upload all of your photos to your Google Photos in the cloud -- this is a good way of keeping the photos safe. If you only have your photos saved to your phone or local computer hard drive, all it takes is a lost phone or a crashed hard drive and you've lost those photos forever. https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6193313?co=GENIE.Platform=Android&hl=en

The best way for a Samsung is to use Samsung's own programs: Sidesync and SmartSwitch. SmartSwitch can back up your entire phone (settings, pictures, files, etc) except for app data. Sidesync will show a window where your phone screen will appear so you can remote control it. You can drag and drop photos and files between your Mac and your phone through this. This can be connected via WiFi so it's basically Airdrop for Samsung.
