How do I keep my camera app turned on?

I am trying to remotely photograph birds at a feeding table but they are very wary on the device. How can I keep the camera app turned on for long periods so that I can use it once they have accepted it's presence.

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? I believe that as long as the Camera app is open, the phone won't sleep (although I haven't tried keeping it on for long periods of time). Are you saying that on your phone, if you open the Camera app but don't take any photos for a while, the phone goes back to sleep?
