black screen and phone vibrates every 30 seconds.

HTC Desire 626 not the S model. Android of course but I don't know the release name. Tonight I got an alert on my phone. It sounded like a text message or some similar notification. I hit the power button to switch on the screen to enter my passcode. The screen flashed on and went black. I tried to turn on the screen again but nothing happened. Then the phone started vibrating every 30 seconds and will not stop. I've tried charging the phone but the little charge light does not come on. I tried to access the phone via my (Linux) computer but the phone does not show up in my menu as a connected device. I tried shutting it off with the power button and doing a hard shut down by pressing and holding the power button and volume down button for 30 seconds. I've tried both of these quite a few times with no success.

What could be the problem and what else should I try before hauling the phone an hour away to a Verizon store with an onsite diagnostic department?

Have you tried factory reset the phone, while this solution will wipe out the data.
