Can i retrieve my photos from either phone or laptop after catastophic error?

I have a Galaxy S5 and i was using the white transfer cable to transfer photos from phone to laptop using the white transfer cable and got the error message "a catastrophic error has tesulted in total system failure" Now i have no photos as i erased them when transfering but they never transfered and now the photos on my laptop ate gone too. I can't use an old cord because my phone has a different type of connector that is long with a separator off center to one side and i havent seen the cable in stores separately.

Welcome to Android Central! That's pretty stressful! Do you have a PC or Mac? Where did you see the error message -- on the phone or the computer? Which system failed -- the phone's? Were you able to reboot the phone, and is it working normally?

The S5 has a full USB 3.0 port, but you can still use any standard microUSB cable as well -- just plug it into the smaller port.
