Don't laugh! I know it's 2017. I still have my very first Droid. I've been using it as a fancy alarm clock since I traded in for a Droid 2 seven or 8 years ago.
My current OS is Froyo 2.2.3. Is it possible to update the OS at this point? I don't use it as a phone (Verizon was the carrier, of course). I would like to keep using it for apps but many of the ones I'd like to use aren't compatible.
Any suggestions or advice would help. It isn't rooted.
    Thanks.

Nope. Not only are their no drivers for the hardware to interact with the software, the hardware isn't powerful enough to run more recent OS versions.

And that doesn't even take into account the storage space on the device (4 GB?), newer versions of Android need almost that much for the core OS files.

I don't think a custom ROM based on Oreo exists.
