OK, it's an older and not very good tablet but I don't think it should be this bad. In addition to not letting me install updates, it loses its settings whenever its battery drains. I have to re-enter my gmail address and password then set up the wifi network again. Everything on the SD card is also erased.

"fixing" the install app problem by clearing the cache is also a non-starter. Done that many times. Nor can I uninstall apps to free up space.

I've read some things online that suggest that it needs a "factory reset", supposedly invoked by holding the power and volume+ buttons when powering it up, but that also fails to work. If I hold the volume+ button down, it simply fails to start.

    Any ideas?

Welcome to Android Central! A properly functioning device shouldn't be reset each time the battery drains. There's probably something wrong with the firmware or hardware, which would probably have to be addressed by a repair shop (and the cost would probably be more than the device is worth).
