There was no "menu" button in the Contacts app (the closest thing was a "more" button in the lower right but there was no "unmerge" option). Instead there was a "Storage locations" button that only appears at the bottom of the contact after scrolling all the way to the end of a specific contact's page. When I clicked on that there was a "Verizon Cloud (Cloud)" entry that could be unlinked by pressing an "Unlink" button to the right. That solved the problem in my case.
Welcome to Android Central! The "More" button is essentially the Menu button (the 3 dot icon is the standard appearance for a menu button). But you found the right option anyway. Were there multiple storage locations shown there? If so, that would confirm that multiple contact entries had been merged.
