Every time I download an app from google play store, the following day I get a notification that google play has used a high percentage of the CPU and to shut it off. (Once it's off via that notification's 'off' option, then the battery and cpu function properly without maxing out.)
I would shut Google Play off right after use, but can't figure out how. Is there a way to shut it off?

When you're finished with an app, stop using the Home button - that leaves the app running. Use the Back button.

Thank you. I will give that a try.
I do see that the app is still shown when I use the "recents button" from the navigation bar (after using the back button instead of home button when finished with app). Also last app used is still listed under battery usage... So I'm not sure if that is working... But I'll check to see if I get the excessive CPU usage warning the next day...

Swipe it off the "recently used" screen and that may kill it. (Unless the phone is rooted, you can't go into Linux and see what's actually running. But you could probably [I've never tried it] use ADB on your PC, connect the phone to the PC, run adb shell on the PC, then run ps. [I can't check because all my phones are rooted.])
