The Nexus 5 phone was released in 2013 and was last updated in 2015 and is now unsupported. Why so short? Where can I buy a phone that I won't have to throw away after 2 years?

    Buy an iPhone. No, seriously.

Google only promises platform updates (Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo) for 2 years from the original on-sale date for the device, now 3 years with the most recent Pixel devices. After those 2 years is another year of monthly security patches.

Some of this is a limitation imposed by the hardware manufacturer. No, not HTC, or LG, or Motorola. It's a limitation imposed by Qualcomm, the company that makes the chips that run these devices (for the most part). Qualcomm stops releasing the "drivers" needed to run newer operating systems on the chips. Without those drivers, no new OS releases.

While my first statement was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, it's not far from the reality. However - if you look at the history of iOS releases, you'll see that while older devices get the new OS they miss out on some of the new features newer devices are getting. The other thing with iOS is that the main apps such as Safari, Mail, Contacts and Calendar are not "decoupled" from the OS - if there is a bug in one of those you're waiting for the next iOS release in the hopes it resolves the bug whereas with Android all those apps are updated through the Play Store, independent of the OS.
