My first Voicemail is not shown to me UNTIL another VM triggers it!

I had this issue with iphone too so I think it is Verizon and not phone? A call comes in and sometimes I don't know, goes to VM, would never know UNTIL another VM shows there are "2". I have the issue where the first call won't show on call log. Since it has happened on 2 different phones, is it the carrier which has been Verizon both phones. This doesn't happen until the second year of owning the phone. Thanks for any help!
