How am I receiving messages when I only have airplane mode + wifi turned on?

Pixel 2 XL user here on Verizon. I'm traveling abroad in Asia right now (normally from U.S.) and upon landing, I made sure to be on airplane mode with wifi turned on since I didn't add an international data plan. When connecting to wifi, I started to receive text messages. Does anyone know how this is possible? And if I will get charged for replying?

Perhaps Verizon offers a WiFi phone and messaging service? If so, that would be in your Wireless & Network Settings.
