Welcome to Android Central! Which video app are you using? Do you see a mute symbol appear? Does the phone play any other sounds normally, or can you hear the video sound using headphones?

Thanks for trying to help. I'm using the standard camera app on my phone and took a video at a concert. The first time I played it, it was fine. Then I posted to Facebook and there was no sound. So I looked at my phone again and when I play it, it shows a name as MUTE_20171203_075255. There is no mute symbol. I cannot hear anything when using headphones. I've taken other videos before and this never happened.

That's very strange. Use your file manager app and look directly in the /DCIM/Camera directory. Can you find the original video file there, and is it still muted?

I downloaded ES file manager and can see the file but can't tell if it is original or not. It too has the MUTE_ name associated with it. There's a second one too that also has that MUTE_ name. Someone told me Facebook can identify copyrighted music (this was the Bicycle song from Queen) and will mute a video. Dano1200r suggested that on this thread as well.

Although I understand the concerns about copyright infringement, it would be extremely unsettling if Facebook were actually altering the original file on your phone. Just to be sure, you're looking in the /DCIM/Camera directory, right?

Yes. And I just doubled checked using the 'explore' option on my phone and both the videos there also show MUTE.

Still not sure how or why they would change the file on your phone. From what I read, if you try to upload a video with copyrighted material, Facebook should just either reject it or send you an email letting you know the video was taken down: https://superpubler.com/blog/be-care...ad-to-facebook. I'm afraid I don't have more insight into this, sorry!

Thanks for trying to help. I suppose it is possible I did some stupid thing when looking at it and accidentally muted but I'd never do that on purpose. First time I played it, great. Then I posted to FB, and it was muted there and on my phone. Weird. Good thing it wasn't a really important thing.

Can you test by posting another video that contains copyrighted material? Perhaps you could take a video of something around the house, while a copyrighted song is playing on your stereo, then post it on Facebook (with an explanation that it's a test video, in case you're concerned that your FB friends might think you've gone off your rocker).

Good idea. I think I have the Bicycle song on CD so that would be a good test.

I did the test and the video plays fine on my phone. So I must have done something stupid in the dark at the concert. It does not show as muted on my phone.

Shazam being bought by Apple. The technology exists that every song you upload can be filtered through an algorithm that your ip can id. Facebook app requires you give them permission to do as they please in your gallery. Use fb on your phones browser and save memory too. Jb a newly created file hasn't received the same mute treatment yet means little.
