When my LG G4 phone goes flat, I plug it in to charge. After a few minutes, it automatically turns on, that's fine. But the screen stays on, and sometimes that drains the battery to the turn-off threshold, so it turns off again. It keeps looping this behaviour, and makes very little progress charging.

Samsung devices have a setting to enable screen stays on while charging.. Settings.. Developer options... Stay awake....

Your LG G4 should not be doing that, at least not by default.
Verify in the Settings that you have not turned on "keep screen on during charging". (Not sure where to find that.)

If that is already turned off, it almost sounds like it is slowly progressing to the infamous boot-loop failure.
