My samsung s3 mini says Im roaming but Im not

I got a new virgin sim and put it in an old s3 mini and now cat get rid of the R above my bars... it also wont let me turn on mobile data. Ive tried searching mobile networks but virgin isnt there, yet my last phone was on virgin and my wifes phone is on virgin !!!

Assuming that you're in the US, was the phone originally a Sprint phone? If not, it can't connect to Sprint's towers (which is what Virgin uses in the US),so you have no service. (And if, for some reason, like it had been on Boost, Sprint won't accept the particular phone on its towers, you have the same problem.)
