Why does my app drawer show no recent items?

[Android Central Question]

I'm using a Lenovo Tab 4 8, Android 7.1.1. Today, after a system update, my recent apps is showing "no recent items". I read that deleting Google data can repair this. So I did that. It did fix it, until I set up the assistant. Then it went back to "no recent items". Is there a permanent fix for this that allows me to use the Google assistant and keep my recent app thing functioning?

I have the same issue on mines after the update .... hopefully they can fix it with a update patch
