When I install a new app the app store automatically makes a shortcut, which I like, but it's annoying because the shortcut always creates it's own slide and places itself on the top left. I have 5 screen-slides and I want to keep it that way and 2 of my slides have plenty of open space, but the new apps always make their own slides.

Welcome to Android Central! Open the Play Store, tap Menu>Settings, and look for an option there to automatically create a shortcut for newly installed apps.

EDIT: Oddly, the Play Store on my Pixel 2 XL no longer has that option. But my phone doesn't add shortcuts automatically, so it may be that Google got rid of that option. My version of the Play Store is 8.7.10 -- what version is yours?

Found it! Long press on home screen, touch home settings, disable "add icon to home screen".
