I ported Outlook contacts to Google to avoid any issues (recommended by some folks), but since then I receive suggestions to merge dublicates and triplicates ️.

Did you already have a contacts list on Google? That would be why you have duplicates. There is the offer to merge your Facebook and Google contacts if you have your Facebook contacts synced to your device (also applies to other services where you might have a contact list that can sync to your device).

Nope, I ported my Outlook contacts to Gmail.
Turns out it's WhatsApp that causing this issue, I'm surprised how stupid Android is, why not merging them all??

    Hej,

I have the similar problem. Albeit I did not import my contacts into gmail, but rather let the outlook app sync my contacts into my phone book. The interesting thing is, if I go to "Contacts" I don't see double accounts only when I look at the contacts tab under "Phone".
If I disable the WhatsApp sync in the "Contacts"-App, no new entries will be produced until I refresh my contacts list in WhatsApp. Then WhatsApp will turn it's sync on again and clutter the "Phone"-App.

It is a peculiar problem. For now my plan is to delete the dublicates in my "Phone"-App and turn off all sync from WhatsApp. Until I get a new WhatsApp contact that should work, I hope until then I find a better solution.
Did you find any other solution for the problem?

    Regards

    Garbage in, garbage out.

Methodman is probably suggesting that WhatsApp could use a few bug fixes.

Yup! It’s a common issue with Android phones. Your contacts can quickly add up when you perform a master reset or import contacts from another source. Reason being, Android build a lot of backups to ensure you won’t lose your precious data should something undesired happen to your device. And one should be grateful because it’s quite easy to clean up your duplicate contacts rather losing them owing to an unintended action.

Never had this issue on Windows, never list any content!

Yes, it is because of WhatsApp. I don't know why we are limited to just Android and IOS. Android is full of bugs, and after all of these years of development, we are still talking about the basic bugs. IOS is all about cleaning your pockets and limiting you. I miss the days of Windows.

I remember it's worse for me when I was still on iPhone. Doesn't seem to be an issue in my Note 8.

You can usually filter contacts in Android such that you only see the ones you want:

I've said it many times, but I'll repeat it - if it involves Facebook, Waze or WhatsApp, suspect the app, not the phone or the OS. (Some people - not you people, the "developers" - seem to think that making a few functions in an app work on a test bed means all functions will work on all devices. Developers [note the lack of quotation marks] know differently.)
