    My friend has an old Galaxy 4. He doesn't want to upgrade his hardware, but some software apps are saying they will no longer function soon. How can he update to a more recent flavor of android?

    Your friend would be looking at getting into the world of installing 3rd-party ROMs then. Our dedicated forum for that device should have info on doing just that, but you have to start wondering how well the device will handle the newer versions of Android, both from a storage space perspective and a RAM perspective. You will need to be a member to post in that forum.

    If it's an i9500, he can update to Mashmallow at https://www.lineageosroms.org/forums...rshmallow-rom/ I don't think there are any 3rd party ROMS for any variant of the S4 past that.
