Up volume button is broken so can't go into recovery mode. Tried Google find my phone but all it did was send a notification which didn't help. Not in usb mode so can't do anything with computer. Should I just throw it out?

Welcome to Android Central! There is no way to recover a password -- it wouldn't be a very good security measure if there were an easy way to do this, and if it was splashed all over Android Central!

It depends on how important the phone is to you. If you really want to keep it, then you could bring it to a repair shop to fix the Volume button, then do a hardware key factory reset. Otherwise, considering how old the phone is, it's probably not worth it.
