Gmail App could not find file in Downloads directory

I transferred a file from my home computer to the Downloads folder on my Samsung Galaxy S 8 cellphone over the USB cable. When I looked at the folder using the "My Files" app the file appears, but when I go into the Gmail app to attach the file to a reply to an e-mail the file does NOT appear. It is as if the Gmail app was not listening for the notification from the kernel that the contents of the folder had changed.

Welcome to Android Central! In the Gmail app, are you certain you're looking in the Downloads folder, and not Drive?

Also, as a workaround, you could upload the file from your computer to your Google Drive, then attach it to your Gmail via Drive.
