But the browser (Chrome) keeps automatically adding https:// to the url, so I can't connect to the device(!) How do I stop Chrome from doing this?

When using a web browser, you need to tell the browser what communication protocol to use (the stuff to the left of the : ). If you don't specify it, most/all browsers will add the http or https for you.

What is the protocol that you are supposed to be using?
