I have tried various options, but I can't find mention of the clipboard. If I press on text in my message box I only get Copy, Cut and Select All in the options given. No mention of clipboard. Nor do I get the option of clipboard if I press and hold the microphone as also suggested. I don't have room for more apps so a solution would be good.

Clearing the clipboard will not give you room for more apps. The clipboard is (usually) a small section of memory set aside within the system to store data that is copied but it's usually only short-term storage and unless there's a clipboard manager app it clears when the device is rebooted.
