What is causing such a high phone idle percentage?

My battery life is terrible. I have to rely on always having a charger with me in case it's to die while I'm out. My phone idle is taking up 35% of my battery at the moment and I find when I check battery usage phone idle is always the highest percent. How can I reduce this?
