Unlocking an Android device without factory reset

[Android Central Question]

I want to perform a Nandroid backup on an Android device, to do that, the device has to be unlocked. The unlock command, adb reboot oem-unlock will perform a factory reset by default. How do I bypass the default factory reset and unlock the device to be able to perform the backup? Thanks
