Why does my screen lock during a business phone call

After making a call to a business, if the answering recording has a number of options, I have to unlock my phone screen to select the keypad after which, the screen locks again.

Also happens at the end of any call - I have to unlock the screen to actually end the call.

It sounds as if your proximity detector (which turns the screen off when it senses your head near it) isn't releasing. (Which means thatit's defective, which means that it has to be replaced.)
