Model E (Second Generation), Android 5.1

Speaker is mechanically OK, as I can hear people who call me.
And everything works with plugin headphones.
But otherwise, no media sound, no ring-tones from the speaker.
Bluetooth is turned off.

Tried reboot - nada
Tried safe mode - nada
Tried wiping the cache - nada
Tried the SoundAbout app - nada
Tried removing the SD card - nada
Tried removing the SIM card - nada

What now?

Welcome to Android Central! When you say the speaker is ok because you can hear people who call you, are you talking about the earpiece speaker or the main loudspeaker? If you can hear people through the earpiece, the main loudspeaker could still be faulty.

I can hear calls thru the main speaker and the earphones. But media and ringtones only thru the earphones.
Oh, and this is a Motorola MOTO E 2nd gen.
Problem just started recently, perhaps after a major update of GOOGLE software?

I just realized that the Moto E 2nd gen only has one speaker -- the earpiece speaker also serves as the loudspeaker. If you turn on speakerphone, does the sound go away? I'm not exactly sure how the wiring is in that phone, but perhaps the wiring responsible for all sound intended to go through the loudspeaker (i.e., media, ringtones, notification tones, and speakerphone audio) has failed.

I've seen in some articles that it could be a loose connection. This article suggests, "You could try gently pressing around the top portion of your phone to see if the speaker comes to life. Some people also report success after slapping it, but be careful not to slap it too hard."

You're right!
A tap and sound comes on.
Another and it goes away.

So it is a mechanical problem after all.
Not sure if I'll try to fix it myself.
Maybe a new phone is in order.
