Do I need to buy another brand new SIM card for the unlocking of my new phone? Or can I use the one from my previous phone with the same company?

You can use the existing one.

If you use the one that was working, it won't bring up the screen asking for the unlock code, You have to use one from a carrier it's locked against (won't work with) to unlock it. It doesn't matter whether the SIM is activated or not, though.
