I've lost my message icon

Perhaps you've just deleted it from your homescreen. Open the app drawer (if you're using the stock Samsung launcher program, it's the icon at the far right of your dock). Scroll until you find your messaging app, then press and hold it, then drag it to the homescreen of your choice.
