    This is an S9+.

This has not happened on any of my previous Samsung phones. It's very annoying. I can't see the phonepad or even hang up without pressing the on/off key.

Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

    Thanks.

Welcome to Android Central! It's normal for the screen to turn off during a phone call when the phone is held up to your ear -- this is triggered by the proximity sensor, and is meant to prevent your face from accidentally pressing anything on the screen. If the screen is immediately turning off after you dial, even without the phone up against your ear, then the proximity sensor might be blocked. This is commonly due to a poorly fitting screen protector or case. Do you have either of those?

    Welcome

Where is the proximity sensor located?
    Generally near the top speaker/earpiece.
