    I've for a Samsung Galaxy 5.
    The screen has gone.
It turns on and buttons indicate the phone itself is on.

No worries. I'll just buy a screen.
Must be like $1.99 for such an old phone.
    Erm... no. VERY expensive.

What am I missing? Why are they so expensive? I only need the glass and not the LED touchscreen part.

    Thanks.

If the LED, LCD and touchscreen are all okay (the glass is cracked?), all you need is a glass screen protector. If the screen doesn't show anything, the LED panel is probably gone, and that means replacing the whole screen - which I don't recommend. But if you insist. you can find them on eBay for about $40. (The screens don't go down in price as they get older - they still cost the vendor what he paid for them back when they came out, which is when he bought them.)

But you'll need a heat gun to remove the old screen - and if you get it 10° too hot, you'll need a new phone. It's a delicate technique that most people learn only after "ruining" a few unrepairable phones.
