I would like to find a file manager app (free, of course), that can show me how many files are in a branch of the directory tree, and how much space that folder and its descendants are occupying. I hate having to drill down through multiple folder levels only to find out that there is an empty folder at the root.

    Does any such beast exist?

Welcome to Android Central! Total Commander can do that. Long-press any folder and tap Properties. It's completely free and ad-free. The Play Store has to say that it contains ads, but this is only because there are links to other apps from the developer (which are also free).
